Summer Festivals in the Languedoc-Roussillon
July 1, 2009 on 9:10 pm | By admin | In TravelSummer in the Languedoc-Roussillon is not only good for lazy days basking in the sunshine, it is also the best time of year to come and enjoy the region’s many festivals. The range of festivals that take place here in July and August is fantastic, from international music events covering every conceivable genre, to traditional celebrations that go back centuries such as the Festival of Saint-Louis, the patron saint of the city of Sète and its famous nautical jousters.
The highlight of the summer calendar is the largest fireworks display in Europe which takes place every Bastille Day at the medieval city in Carcassonne. Along with this fireworks display is a month long music, dance and theatre festival in what has to the most atmospheric venue in Languedoc Roussillon, the open-air amphitheatre within Carcassonne’s walled city. Added to these main events, there are many smaller local festivals throughout the summer and this is when villages fill with people again as everyone comes out to enjoy them.
