The world of Model Railroads and Railroading is divided into "scales"or "gauges". You probably are fimiliar with these scales, O, HO, N, and Z. The gauge denotes the size of the model trains in relation to the real thing. N gauge is 1:160 the size of a real train. Although n gauge is not the most popular gauge - that distinction belongs to HO - N gauge is very popular with hobbyists that don’t have a huge amount of space to build their layout. The smaller size of N gauge allows builders to put together a sizeable and realistic layout in a small space such as an apartment. Realism does not suffer with N gauge, take a trip to a local hobby shop and see firsthand how realistic N gauge engines and rolling stock has become.
