The definition of spousal payments is very specific. It can only be a check written to the recipient themselves and not to a mortgage or vehicular lender for example. I didn’t know this! If I have to cross this bridge of divorce, I am going to make sure that the house, my car, plus an alimony check keeps coming in the mail every month. I thought any payments made to support the spouse would be considered a spousal payment but apparently not. This is good to know considering we have always planned that I would stay home with the kids until they went to school. Why should the children suffer because he wants a divorce?
