Conjugating: this is probably the Italian verb most associable to the re-edition of "Programma 8" by Sargiani and Helander, one of Alessi "epic" successes. Conjugating, because the function of preservation has been added to the first edition’s original functions of cooking and serving, a diligent and full completion of the three regular inflections required by the Italian language. But conjugating to express also the second meaning of the verb, which is to match, harmonize, enable different, autonomous elements to co-exist, in this case valorising their intrinsic potential to exchange role and position, and to invent new interactions with other elements of the group. In the 1970s, next to the dream of a less class-conscious society, and flying the flag of a free and equal relationship between the sexes, the methodological undertaking of architectural design was radically rethought.
