History of the wassily chair

Marcel Breuer designed the Wassily chair in honor of his colleague in the year 1925 or 1926, the father of abstract painting, Wassily Kandinsky. Sophistication and simplicity meet in these utilitarian chairs and tables inspired by historical architecture. Believed to be the first bent tubular steel chair design, the Wassily Chair distills the traditional club chair to a series of strong, spare lines, executed with dynamic material counterpoint. The chair became known as Wassily decades later, when it was re-released by an Italian manufacturer who had learned of the anecdotal Kandinsky connection in the course of his research on the chair’s origins.
